Midea has voluntarily recalled approximately 1.7 million U-shaped window air conditioners due to a drainage design flaw that allows water to pool inside the units, creating conditions for mold growth. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall following 152 reports of mold growth and 17 reports of respiratory symptoms, including allergic reactions, coughing, sneezing, and sore throats.
The affected units were sold under 10 brand names, including Midea, Frigidaire, Insignia, Mr. Cool, and Comfort Aire. They retailed between $280 and $500 and were available at major retailers including Best Buy, Costco, Home Depot, and Amazon from March 2020 through May 2025. Consumers who purchased these units are advised to contact Midea directly to receive a free repair or a full or prorated refund.
This recall is significant for anyone concerned about indoor air quality. Window air conditioners are a common source of mold exposure, particularly when drainage systems fail and moisture accumulates in enclosed spaces. Given the five-year sales window and wide retail distribution, the number of affected households is likely substantial. Owners of any U-shaped window AC unit purchased during this period should verify whether their model is included in the recall before continued use.
